Fishing Tips

When following our "Fishing Tips" you will catch more fish.  Please, think smart and practice catch and release fishing when you catch more that you can eat.  Everyone like to Bar-B-Que nice fresh halibut fillets on the beach so we need to make sure there will be plenty left there for others to catch, including us.

Cooler temperatures mean full coolers of fish!

This is the time of the year when the water temperatures start to drop a little and the fishin' get a little better.  The water temperature will vary from about 70-78 degrees this time of the year and the fish love it.  The mullet will be in close and the halibut will be right there to eat them up.  This is our favorite time of the year to visit Rocky Point.  Thanksgiving weekend can't be beat.  Fish the shallows with silver spoons and bass plugs for a stringer full of halibut.  The Spotted bay bass will start to slow down a little this time of the year but they are still there.  It'll just take a little more work to get a bunch of them.

Shore Fishing in Rocky Point

When fishing from shore in the Rocky Point area try using light line.  6-10# line on a 6' medium action freshwater pole will help you out perform all of the other anglers on the beach.  We recommend using a high quality spinning reel (Coffee Grinder) for this type of fishing.  Spending the extra $20.00 to get a better reel will pay off big dividends with more fish landed.

If fishing bait, use a small piece of squid on a size 2 - 8 thin wire hook.  We recommend Owner brand hooks for shore fishing.  Put a #4 or #5 split shot about 18" - 24" above the hook for weight.  If you need a little extra weight, put a small 1/4 - 3/8 ounce sliding egg sinker just above the split shot.  You will lose a lot of tackle in the rocks so bring extra and don't get discouraged, this is the way to catch more fish off the shore.

If you want to fish lures, try small 1-1/4" - 2-1/4" silver spoons with treble hooks in the sandy areas adjacent to the reefs.  Cast as far out as possible and reel in at different speeds to find what the fish want.  Some days, dragging the spoon on the bottom will get you into the Halibut other days you need to reel fast with small jerks to get Leather Jackets and Sierra.  Try not to use the spoons over the rocks, you will lose dozens of them.  The lures to use over the rocks are are freshwater crank baits and jerk baits designed for large mouth bass.  Use colors that are blue or green for best results.  The lures with the small red stripes to imitate blood on the gills work fabulous in the rocks for Spotted Bay Bass, Sierra, Leather Jackets, Leopard Grouper and Corvina.  If fishing in deeper areas there is always the chance of getting Mexican Barracuda and Yellowtail with these lures.
